AIA Central Virginia is proud to kick off Architecture Week today with a mural on the Community Chalk Board for the communities enjoyment!

Inspired from drawings by students from Clark Elementary School and a few of Albemarle County’s elementary schools, the Renaissance School came to help us color and add in the finer details to this vibrant collage of our community.

Playing with elements, the drawings peek in and out of dogwood trees and a colonnade, made famous in Virginia by T.J.

Starting off in the rolling hills of the county, the river snakes past  the Rotunda and the Corner; stops at the farmers market and downtown; passes through our neighborhoods; and it finally stops to look at Mr. Jefferson’s home from a far.

AIA CV hopes you enjoy an exciting week chalked full of events!

Tuesday, April 27th is Women in Design Day during Architecture Week, and in addition to the panel discussion that evening we will streaming an AUDIO ROLL CALL over one of the sound cones in the Naug throughout the day and we need your help!

We are gathering together a list of all the women architects in recent history, from the ones that helped pave the way early on to the ones working to make a name for themselves in the field today. We will be presenting that written list at the event, but will also be playing a recording that lists off the names (an AUDIO ROLL CALL) so that everyone who passes through the Naug on April 27th will be reminded of the great women in the field.

Architecture Week is teaming up with local storytelling collective Secretly Y’all to record these names and edit them together for the final piece. We would love to have a lot of different female voices on this recording and so if any of you are willing to lend some time to this project, we will be recording on Thursday, April 22, at 730 PM at 411 Altamont St Apt 2 off of West High St. If any of you are interested in helping with this project please join us. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Also, if you know of a female architect that you think belongs on this list that we might miss please feel free to comment below.

Finally, we’d like to send out a HUGE thanks to Leslie Channel, Lauren Russo, and Rachel Vogus, the ladies behind Secretly Y’all, for their work on this project and their support of Architecture Week as a whole!
